Impact of the Ebola outbreak on your decision to travel to Africa

The Ebola outbreak is a frightening prospect for all of us no matter where we are in the world. But is the worry of being infected by it putting you off travelling to Africa?

It is an extremely serious virus and a horrendous situation for those living in the outbreak region around Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea. However, it is important for everyone to remember that it is not an airborne disease and can only be transmitted through the exchange of body fluids.
Another important aspect to remember is that Africa is an incredibly immense continent. Major cities such as London, Paris and Rome are all closer to the outbreak zone compared to many major African cities including Kenya's Nairobi and South Africa's Johannesburg and Cape Town.

African economies as a whole rely very heavily on tourism mainly associated with the wildlife. Unfortunately, many countries are never able to reach their full potential because every time they climb out of one rut, they are slammed straight back down into the next. There are a number of reasons for this, including political turmoil, corruption, poverty, wildlife poaching and the most recent headline being the Ebola virus outbreak.

Everyone travelling to and within Africa is obviously advised to think firstly about their individual health and safety. However, with regards to the Ebola outbreak, it should not create an impenetrable barrier preventing you from exploring the incredible sights and sounds of Africa. Obviously keep an eye on news reports and the latest updates of the situation but please, do not make this the next big rut jeopardising Africa's tourist industry.

If you are concerned about the situation, follow the BBC's reporting on the latest situations at www.bbc.co.uk/ebola

Despite what is happening, the wildlife will continue to roam throughout the many game reserves, the brilliant orange sun will continue to rise and set over the distant horizons and the vibrant towns and cities will continue to bustle.

But will this be the year you take that step and witness what it is that Africa has to offer or have you already be deterred due to the situation?
